Free electron laser (FEL (KU-FEL))
- Free electron lasers use light emitted by an electron beam accelerated to near the speed of light in a vacuum. Generally, it has the characteristic of producing high-intensity monochromatic light with a continuously variable wavelength.
- The Institute of Advanced Energy uses an electron source called a hot cathode high-frequency electron gun to generate electron beams, aiming to create a small, high-performance device that can be used in a laboratory.
- For the first time in the world, we overcame the problem of operational instability with this method by precisely controlling the high-frequency power input to the electron gun, and in 2008 we succeeded in oscillating a laser at a wavelength of 12.4 μm.
- As of January 2020, we provide wavelength-tunable and powerful laser light in the mid-infrared region of 3.4 to 26 μm for joint research.
- The mid-infrared region, which this device can generate, contains many vibrational excitation levels for molecules, so the mid-infrared region is also called the molecular fingerprint region.
- It is possible to conduct selective excitation experiments by adjusting the laser wavelength to the vibrational excitation level of molecules. Pump-probe experiments can also be performed with free electron lasers and synchronized nanosecond and picosecond Nd: YAG lasers.
- It is also possible to carry out experiments to investigate the emission of light from crystalline materials when hit by electron beam irradiation (maximum energy 40 MeV) or a single high-energy (2-40 MeV) electron using an electron accelerator for free electron laser generation.
